How to choose a tennis coach as an adult beginner
Compare teaching approach, practical arrangements and the full lesson cost, then use your first tennis lesson to decide whether a coach fits.

In this guide
← For learnersChoose a tennis coach who can explain how they work with adult beginners, offers arrangements you can keep, and makes the full price and booking conditions clear. Use the first lesson to assess whether you understand their explanations and leave with a useful next step.
You do not need to know tennis terminology before making an enquiry. A short description of your experience, goals and available times gives a prospective coach something practical to respond to.
Turn a broad goal into a useful enquiry
Illustrative learner scenario: Mia is fictional. Her situation and enquiry are invented examples, not a VOLOCOACH customer experience.
Mia wants to start tennis after work. She has played occasionally with friends, but has never taken a private lesson. Her goal is to feel more comfortable playing socially, and she can usually attend on a weekday evening.
“I want to get better” gives a coach little context. Mia can instead send:
I am an adult beginner who has played a little with friends. I would like to feel more confident playing socially. Do you teach learners at this level, what would an initial lesson cover, and which weekday evening times do you currently offer?
Add your preferred area and any travel constraints. Ask whether the venue and equipment arrangements work for someone starting out. The aim is to establish fit before agreeing to a longer commitment.
Compare the answers, not just the headline price
A useful comparison covers teaching approach and practical details together. Keep unanswered questions visible rather than guessing the answer from a profile photograph or a short description.
| What to compare | Question to ask | What you need to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Experience with your starting point | How do you usually work with adult beginners? | Whether the coach can describe a relevant approach |
| First-lesson plan | What would we discuss and work on initially? | How the coach identifies a useful starting point |
| Explanation and feedback | How do you explain a task and review progress? | Whether the explanation makes sense to you |
| Venue and equipment | Where will we meet, and what should I bring? | The actual arrangements for that lesson |
| Total price | What is included, and are there separate charges? | Coaching, court or venue costs and any booking charges |
| Changes and cancellation | What happens if either of us needs to change the time? | The applicable process and conditions |
If a coach lists a qualification or membership, ask what it means and check it with the relevant issuing organisation where possible. A qualification is useful information, but it does not answer every question about teaching style, availability or your goals.
Use the first lesson to judge the working relationship
Before the session, tell the coach what you hope to learn. Afterwards, ask yourself:
- Did the coach ask about my starting point and listen to my goal?
- Could I understand the explanations and ask questions?
- Did I know what we were trying to work on?
- Did I leave with a next step I could explain in my own words?
- Can I realistically keep the proposed time, travel and cost?
One lesson does not establish long-term progress. It can help you decide whether the communication and arrangements fit. If something was unclear, ask the coach to explain it before booking more sessions.
Questions before you book
Should I buy a package immediately?
First understand what is included, how individual lessons are arranged, and what happens if plans change. A package is a different commitment from one lesson. Do not assume that unused lessons can always be cancelled or exchanged for cash.
Does sending a request confirm my lesson?
Check the booking process you are using. In VOLOCOACH, confirmation follows coach acceptance and successful collection of the required payment; an enquiry or request alone is not confirmation. See the FAQ for the current process.
What should I prepare once I have chosen a coach?
Confirm the meeting point, equipment and charges, then prepare one goal and one question. Our first-lesson guide gives you a checklist to use before and after the session.
